Catherine Purves, PTA
PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT | BAINBRIDGE ISLAND
Originally from Kitsap County, Catherine left to join the Air Force at 17 years old. From there she earned her Business degree from the University of Maryland and lived in the Bay Area for 20 years working mostly as a Software Project Manager. In 2009, she and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island for the quality of life and to be near her family.
In 2010 she made a mid-life career change to do work that she felt passionate about. She chose Physical Therapy because it would support a healthy lifestyle, allow her to fully enjoy life on Bainbridge Island without commuting, and provide an opportunity to integrate and be of service within the community.
She has been working as a Physical Therapist Assistant since graduating from the Olympic College program in 2013.
In order to accelerate and broaden her learning experience, she works part-time at numerous facilities including:
DaVinci Physical Therapy Here, she provides outpatient physical therapy to a wide patient population in need of manual therapies. She trains patients in exercises and educates patients in self-care to recover functional movement so they can fully participate in their chosen activities of daily living.
Triumph Therapy Catherine delivers in-home therapy to patients with limitations or disabilities. She has extensive experience with neurological and geriatric conditions, strength and balance deficits, home assessment modifications, and gait and mobility training with assistive devices.
Catherine occasionally leads seated exercise classes at Assisted Living Facilities.
She has provided rehabilitation therapy to patients in Skilled Nursing, Memory Care and Long Term Care facilities. Conditions vary and include orthopedic post-surgery rehab, stroke and cardio rehab, strength and balance issues, breathing difficulties, training in assistive devices. Extensive experience with dementia.
Catherine has a wide variety of interests and hobbies and always enjoys hearing clients tell her of their adventures so she can add them to her “bucket list”. She has traveled to over 25 countries, lived overseas three times and hopes to do more in the future. She frequently hikes and kayaks, does yoga and meditates, and walks her dog every day all over the island. On occasion she will ski, backpack, jog in an organized race, or find another excuse to do something active with friends. She belongs to several book clubs and a writing group, enjoys attending theater (especially to watch her husband) and supporting the arts.
